Special Yoga Class: Surya Namaskar

Saturday, March 23, 2024 | 4:00 - 5:15pm

This yoga class will focus on the ancient practice of Surya Namaskara: Salute to the Sun. After a warm up, participants will practice the Surya Namaskara series, which consists of 12 postures, to the soothing and inspiring sound of live chanting of Sanskrit mantras. The practice will conclude with a cool down and guided savasana (resting posture).

The day's program will also include:

  • A guided tour of the Mount Madonna campus (weather permitting)
  • Brunch & dinner in the shared community dining hall
  • Personal time
  • Option to stay for arati after dinner
  • Option to book a wellness treatment at the Kaya Kalpa Wellness Center (additional cost)

Presenters

bhavaniBhavani Siegel was introduced to yoga in childhood, practicing asana and yogic breathing with her family. She met Baba Hari Dass in 1974, became his disciple, and began formal study and sādhana practice. In 1975, Bhavani began teaching yoga. A senior yoga faculty and founding member of Mount Madonna, Bhavani teaches many aspects of Yoga, including meditation, pranayama, and yoga philosophy. Her specialties are: Root Values in Yoga: Yama & Niyama, Mantra Yoga: Sanskṛit as Sacred Sound, and Ritual & Symbolism in the Path of Yoga.

Through yoga teacher trainings, seminars and retreats, Bhavani has continued her journey of “teach to learn.” She loves chanting and singing, mystic poetry, and the solace of nature.

Jen Rand, RYT200, MA- Ayurveda: Jen completed her training at Mount Madonna in 2013. Her yoga practice is deeply influenced by her studies of Ayurveda, which allows her to offer options and modifications to help students tailor their practices to their bodies' needs. Jen’s experience spans over 15 years, including teaching English to newcomer students, working as an Outdoor Education Naturalist, and teaching Spanish at the elementary and middle school levels at Mount Madonna School. She has also worked in administration, and currently serves as the Secretary for the Mount Madonna Institute Board of Directors.

In addition to practicing yoga, she enjoys gardening, cooking, hiking with her dog, and spending time with her husband and cat.
